Advent Day 6: Big and Little

BIG AND LITTLE

PSALM 146: 5-10:

Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God, the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them—the Lord, who remains faithful forever.   He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets the prisoners free, the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. The Lord reigns forever; your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord.”

During the Christmas season, the needs of our fellow man become more pronounced. It seems that all around us we can see evidence of oppression, hunger, loneliness, illness and physical challenges, while the modern culture of “The Holidays” teaches us to  act happy, spend more, do more, and look beautiful.  It is easy to feel overwhelmed when you see the suffering of others, whether they are friends, family, or coworkers, or far away in a war-torn country.  What can we do?
The 146th Psalm teaches us that God is upholding the oppressed, hungry, bound, blind, bowed down, and lonely!  The longing we feel in our hearts to help those in need comes from God. He invites us to join Him in His work in ministering to people who are sick, poor, or haven’t heard the Good News about Jesus.  We can’t make a huge difference by ourselves, but the Body of Christ working together is world-changing!
Our God is BIG!  Psalm 146 calls Him “the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them “. Our God is bigger than bigotry, hatred, wickedness, apathy, depression, despair. Our God is so BIG that He was not ashamed to join us here as a LITTLE baby. And, Oh, how that has changed us all.
Prayer: Thank you, God for loving us. We are not worthy of anything You have given us. Help us to keep our hearts ready for a Word from You so that we can join Your BIG plans for our weary and hurting world.  Amen.
